Mechanith Devlog #1 — The Swap
Across my gaming experience, I have learned that many games tend to stay static or follow a given formula. That is natural — and even good. Once the discovery phase of a genre’s mechanics is done, developers (indie ones included) tend to stick to what works and polish it. The next generation of games then feels more polished, but starved of design innovation. Most devs don’t want to risk it all; they aim for a digestible, market-validated product. And that’s okay.
But not with us.
Exploring the rogue-like bubble, we found that visual input and player control are king, while everything else — hidden mechanics included — is secondary. That is why so little has changed in this genre outside of game jams, where the true hidden gems live. And that is why we want to bet on something big: The Swap.
The Swap is our name for a mechanic where, in real time, you can change character between the standard main player found in any rogue-like and a companion — different health, different abilities, different mechanics — all backed by a system rooted in our lore: the Sync Energy.
This opens a gate of immense possibilities, lifting the simple rogue-lite experience into a more conscious, tactical one:
“Should I use the base character, or swap to the companion in this moment?”
That question is exactly what we want you asking — with a smooth and fun experience to answer it.
Risking it all
The inflection point is how to implement this mechanic inside a frenetic, fast-paced loop, a given in any rogue-like. We want to add fun, not friction. And this game is our proposal to shake the genre.
